A “Run-Cation” at Angkor Wat
Exploring Cambodia Through Running
In December 2022, I embarked on a unique adventure — my very first “run-cation” or running vacation. This wasn’t just any run; it was a half-marathon at the majestic Angkor Wat in Cambodia, one of Southeast Asia’s most iconic landmarks. The experience was unlike any other, blending the thrill of running with the excitement of travel and exploration.
A Journey to Cambodia
This trip marked my first visit to Cambodia, a country rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. I traveled with a group of friends from a non-profit organization based in Singapore.
The entire trip was organized as a fundraiser, and each of us fully self-funded our participation. What made this journey even more special was the context — Cambodia was one of the first countries in Southeast Asia to open up after the COVID-19 pandemic, making our adventure feel like a breath of fresh air after years of restricted travel.
Planning and Preparation
We registered for the race through World’s Marathons, a website that not only makes the registration process easy but also offers a full refund if you change your mind. It’s essential to check the cancellation policy and how long you have to make your decision. Once our race tickets were confirmed, the next step was booking our flights. In 2022, flight options were still limited due to the lingering effects of the pandemic, so most of us opted for direct flights from Singapore to Siem Reap via Singapore Airlines.
Arrival in Siem Reap
Upon arriving in Siem Reap, we were eager to explore the city. The process of getting around the city turned out to be much smoother than expected. We quickly adapted to using “Grab,” a popular ride-hailing app that offers affordable transportation options. For instance, a ride from our hotel to Angkor Wat, just an 11-minute journey, cost less than S$6 via a “Grab Tuk-Tuk.”
The Race Day Experience
The highlight of our trip, of course, was the half-marathon at Angkor Wat. Running 21 kilometers around the site of ancient temple complex, alongside thousands of participants, was a surreal experience. The race began early in the morning, allowing us to witness the sunrise over the temples — a sight that added a magical touch to our run.
Although we were initially uncertain about the race route and how to even get to the starting point so early, everything fell into place once we arrived in Siem Reap and spoke with the local hotel staff. The race organizers had also sent an updated email in October 2022 with details about race pack collection, ensuring we were well-prepared.
Exploring Siem Reap and Angkor Wat
Aside from the race, we made sure to explore the local attractions. Angkor Wat was, without a doubt, the main attraction. But our trip also included visits to local performances, tours, and charitable activities. One of the highlights was attending a performance at the Phare Circus, an incredible display of local talent and culture.
Siem Reap offered a delightful culinary experience as well, with its cuisine striking a perfect balance between Vietnamese and Thai flavors. We also spent time researching the history of Cambodia, particularly Angkor Wat, through books and videos before our trip. This background knowledge made our visit even more meaningful, as we could better appreciate the architecture, art, and cultural significance of the places we visited.
Safety and Concerns
Before our trip, we were aware of reports about safety concerns, including incidents of kidnapping by syndicates targeting tourists for scam operations. However, we felt safe throughout our stay, as we took precautions by sticking to well-populated areas and only venturing out of the city when accompanied by a tour guide, especially during our visits to local charities and schools.
Conclusion
My first “run-cation” at Angkor Wat was an unforgettable experience that combined the thrill of travel with the joy of running. It allowed me to explore Cambodia in a unique way, connecting with its culture, history, and people while supporting a good cause. If you’re considering a running vacation, I highly recommend it — especially if your destination is as breathtaking as Angkor Wat.
