Making the Most of Time and Progress

As we find ourselves in September 2024, there are only four months left in the year. For many of us, the passage of time feels as though it accelerates in the latter half of the year. The new year may feel like it was just yesterday, but the reality is that time is an ever-dwindling asset. The key to making the most of what remains is learning to use every day effectively, staying conscious of goals set earlier in the year, and reassessing where we are in relation to them.

Reflecting on the Goals Set in January

At the start of the year, many of us likely set goals — both personal and professional. By now, with four months left, we should ideally be at least halfway to achieving these targets. But are we? Take a moment to think about where you stand in relation to the objectives you established in January. Have you hit the halfway mark? If not, why do you think that is?

It’s not uncommon to feel like we’re stuck or not making progress in certain areas of our lives. Perhaps you set lofty goals that seemed realistic at the time but now feel overwhelming or unattainable. Life happens — unexpected events, responsibilities, or distractions can pull us away from our planned trajectory. It’s important to periodically reassess both our goals and the strategies we’ve put in place to achieve them. At the end of the day (or year), all we are really trying to do is move ourselves forward a step at a time.

Why Does Progress Feel Stalled?

If you’re feeling stagnant or like you’re not moving forward, it could be for a number of reasons. One common issue is the gap between expectation and reality. Often, we set overly ambitious goals without accounting for potential roadblocks.

Another factor could be a lack of clear daily, weekly, or monthly steps.

When we don’t break our goals down into actionable tasks, it becomes easy to lose focus or motivation, leading to the feeling that we’re not getting anywhere.

Procrastination also plays a role. Time slips by when we keep putting things off, thinking there will always be a tomorrow. As the saying goes, “Tomorrow is not a given.” The reality is that every day we delay takes us further from the possibility of achieving our goals. We must recognize that time is finite, and each passing day is an opportunity we won’t get back.

Another critical reason for feeling stalled is a lack of tangible proof of progress. Without clear markers showing how far we’ve come, it can feel like our efforts are going unnoticed. This is where the concept of “proof of progress” comes into play.

The Power of Proof of Progress

“Proof of progress” is a powerful concept that allows us to track, measure, and celebrate the small wins on our journey. When we can see visible proof that we are moving forward, it becomes easier to stay motivated and continue striving toward our goals.

But what constitutes proof of progress? It can be anything that quantifies or illustrates improvement — whether it’s tracking the number of workouts you’ve completed, the skills you’ve gained, or the projects you’ve finished. It’s essential to recognize that even small steps count. By documenting and acknowledging these accomplishments, we reinforce the belief that we are indeed moving forward.

This practice helps counteract the feeling that all our efforts are for nothing, offering reassurance that we are making headway, even if the results aren’t immediately apparent.

Improvement or Delusion?

However, it’s important to consider the difference between genuine improvement and mere delusion. Sometimes we convince ourselves that we are making progress when, in reality, we may just be going through the motions. This can happen when we focus too much on busywork or activities that don’t directly contribute to our larger goals. In this case, we may be working hard but not smart.

One way to ensure you’re not falling into this trap is to continually ask yourself: “Is what I’m doing bringing me closer to my goal?” If the answer is no, it may be time to reevaluate your approach. A clear, well-defined goal paired with specific actions is the best way to guarantee real progress.

Can You Plan Ahead for 6 to 12 Months?

One strategy that can be particularly effective when it comes to achieving long-term goals is advance planning. Many organizations engage in an annual “workplan seminar” where teams gather to discuss and map out the coming year. During this process, major events are highlighted, key tasks are outlined, and a broad vision for the next 12 months is established. This kind of structured planning offers a roadmap that helps individuals and teams anticipate challenges and opportunities ahead of time.

In the same way, individuals can benefit from creating their own personal work plans. By setting goals for the next 6 to 12 months, you create a framework for your activities and upcoming commitments, allowing you to break down your targets into manageable chunks. This process gives you a sense of direction, enabling you to focus your energy on what matters most.

But why should we plan so far ahead? The simple answer is that it prepares us for the future. When we know what we want to achieve, we can anticipate obstacles and make the necessary adjustments to stay on course. It also gives us something concrete to aim for — whether that’s a personal milestone, professional success, or a specific dream.

Striving for What You Want vs. Going with the Flow

An important distinction to make is between striving for what *you* want and passively going with the flow, waiting to see what happens. While flexibility is necessary in life, we must also take ownership of our ambitions.

If there are things you consider a priority — whether it’s advancing your career, improving your health, or pursuing a creative passion — it’s critical to take action sooner rather than later.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of waiting for a better time or assuming that more opportunities will come around later. However, tomorrow is not promised. We must use the time we have today to work toward what we want, rather than assuming there will always be another chance.

Setting Challenging Targets

When setting goals, it’s important to make sure they are at least a little challenging. If our targets are too easy, we run the risk of coasting and losing the motivation to push ourselves. Growth and improvement come from stepping out of our comfort zones and striving for something a bit beyond our current abilities. The satisfaction of achieving a challenging goal is far greater than the fulfillment of meeting an easy one.

That said, the challenge should be realistic. Setting goals that are impossible to achieve can lead to frustration and burnout. The key is finding the sweet spot — a target that pushes you to grow but is still attainable with effort and dedication.

Learn from those who have come before you, and ask for help on how they achieved what you are looking for. Perhaps it was through pure hard work, or luck or some fancy hack. No matter the reason, just by asking, you remind yourself of the targets you are aiming for, and learn to develop strategies for success.

The Joy of Success and Learning from the Process

When we accomplish our goals — whether big or small — we experience a sense of success that is deeply rewarding. The obstacles we overcame, the skills we developed, and the lessons we learned along the way all contribute to the sense of fulfillment that comes with achieving something meaningful.

This feeling of success is amplified when we reflect on the process it took to get there.

It’s important to take time to enjoy these successes. Too often, we reach a goal only to immediately set our sights on the next one, without stopping to appreciate how far we’ve come. Taking a moment to celebrate your victories reinforces the value of your efforts (TO YOURSELF!) and provides the motivation to keep going.

Moreover, every goal achieved offers a learning experience. Even when things don’t go exactly as planned, there’s always something to be gained from the process — whether it’s a new perspective, a refined skill, or a lesson in resilience.

Making Things Happen - For Yourself

At the end of the day, making things happen the way we want requires intentional effort. Instead of waiting around to see what others are doing and then joining in, we need to proactively pursue our own goals and priorities. This means taking the initiative, setting clear objectives, and being willing to put in the work required to achieve them.

This proactive approach not only increases the likelihood of success but also allows us to take control of our lives. Rather than reacting to the world around us, we become the architects of our own destinies, shaping our futures according to our values and aspirations.

Time is Finite: Act Now

Perhaps the most important takeaway as we enter the final stretch of 2024 is that time is finite. We cannot afford to delay our dreams and ambitions, thinking that we’ll always have another opportunity. The truth is that none of us know how much time we have, and that makes it all the more critical to live fully in the present.

There’s a profound difference between merely existing and truly living.

To live fully means to embrace every day as an opportunity to grow, to strive, and to experience the richness of life. It means pursuing our goals with passion and purpose, while also taking time to enjoy the journey.
